Personal current daily setup is running fully functional using the latest SOLODock revision.

MacBook stays tucked away, cables stay routed and connected easily, desk stays clear.

This is the first version that feels close to the original idea: not just a mount, not just neat cable management ideas, but a cleaner way to make a MacBook part of a proper desk setup and easy to go from on the go to docked back at your workplace.

Still refining the finish and packaging, but the core experience is finally where I wanted it so product sale should go up soon.

New Pro prototype came off the printer today.

Small change to the fast release mechanism — around 0.2mm wider — but it makes a big difference with smoothness. Now works without requiring too much force to eject the Mac.

Most improvements are not dramatic. They are tiny changes that make the product feel more finished and take time but I won't ship new products until I feel they are truly ready.

Quick install note from testing today:

Before fixing the dock fully in place, connect your cables first and slide the MacBook in and out a few times.

It sounds obvious, but cable tension, desk position and even small movement during shipping can change how everything sits. A setup can look perfectly fine during a test fit, then shift slightly once installed with real cables in place.

All docks are test fitted before shipping, but there may still be tiny tolerance differences from unit to unit.

If the fit feels slightly too tight, simply loosen the bolts one small turn at a time and check the MacBook between each adjustment until it feels right.

Better to position the dock around the real setup, not just the empty test fit.

Testing PLA and PETG side by side this week.

PLA gives the cleaner finish, but PETG is making more sense for strength and heat resistance, especially for setups near windows, warm desks or long clamshell sessions where applicable.

Trying to find the right balance between finish, durability and repeatability.

It is easy to make one good prototype. The harder part is making every unit feel consistent.

Think best option is default to PLA for everyday users and those that know they push their setup have the option of PETG upgrade.

One thing I’ve underestimated throughout development is how difficult it is to achieve consistency between a CAD model and the final printed part.

A measurement can be perfect on screen, but once it’s printed, even tiny variations become noticeable when you’re trying to align cables, connectors and a MacBook within fractions of a millimetre.

This week alone I’ve gone through around ten revisions of what is essentially the same part.

Most changes are barely visible. A slight tolerance adjustment here, a cable channel shift there, another test print, another measurement, and then back into CAD again.

The goal isn’t just to make it fit.

The goal is to make every cable align exactly where it should, every time, while maintaining a secure fit for the MacBook itself.

When you’re working to around 0.1mm accuracy, the difference between “good enough” and “perfect” often ends up being several more overnight prints.

Slow progress, but worth it. And future model support will be added as these get ironed out and finalised.

First proper SOLODock prototype is on the desk today.

The idea is still simple: get the MacBook off the desk, keep the setup clean, and make it feel like it belongs there rather than looking like an add-on.

The shape works but doesn't seamlessly hide into a space. It holds everything, but it does not feel effortless yet.

I want this to be the kind of product you install once and stop thinking about forgetting its there.

I’ve spent the last few weeks looking for a clean way to mount a MacBook under a desk without creating a mess of cables or losing easy access when I need to take it with me.

There are plenty of laptop stands and holders out there, but none seem to solve the problem in the way I want. Most are bulky, awkward to use, or look like an afterthought once installed.

After multiple evenings of searching, I decided to just try and start modelling and building prototypes.

The first sketches are already done and I’ve started experimenting with a few rough 3D printed concepts. Nothing fancy yet — just trying to understand what works, what doesn’t, and how compact something like this can be while still feeling secure.

No idea if this turns into a real product, but it’s a problem I keep coming back to, so it feels worth exploring.

For now, the goal is simple:

Get the MacBook off the desk, keep it accessible, and make it feel like it was always meant to be there.

03 / WORKSHOP LOG

What's on the bench right now.

A running log of what I'm prototyping, shipping, or planning next — most of it sparked by an email or a note from someone using the dock. Updated whenever something moves. No comments, no votes, just an honest view of where things are.

2 ON THE BENCH
1 PLANNED MODEL

Protective liner testing

Tested different low-friction liner options to protect the MacBook when sliding in and out of the dock.

The goal is simple: soft enough to prevent marks, thin enough to keep the fit accurate, and smooth enough that daily use still feels effortless.

On the bench

PETG material trials

Compared PLA, PETG and other material options for strength, heat resistance and finish quality.

PLA gives a cleaner surface, but PETG is proving better for extreme desk environments where heat, pressure and long-term use matter more.

Planned

Pro quick-release system

Worked on the Pro fast-release mechanism so the MacBook can be removed quickly without making the dock feel loose.

This has been one of the harder balances: secure enough to trust under a desk, but still convenient enough for everyday use.

ON THE BENCH

Cable replacement testing

Tested different cable replacements and higher-quality power/data cables to reduce compatibility issues.

Early built-in connector ideas created too many variables, so using reliable replaceable cables gives better long-term flexibility and easier servicing. And adding the option for customers to buy them separately.

Shipping now

Packaging and install checks

Started testing how each dock arrives, installs and adjusts once fitted to a real desk.

Every unit needs to be test fitted before shipping, but the final setup still depends on desk material, cable tension and small user adjustments. Packaging is still in sourcing so hang in there while we make changes to make the packaging finalised.

SOURCING

Tolerance calibration

I printed several small test sections to ensure the real-world fit matched the CAD measurements. Even a tiny 0.1mm difference matters when aligning ports cables and the MacBook body.

These small print variations can significantly impact the finished product’s feel. The MacBook Pro 14 and 16-inch models are ready and working on the 15-inch Air right now while the 13-inch and Neo models are due soon.
